Sun in Splendor is a series of paintings inspired by Lester Raymer, the historical sun-in-splendor motif, and my 2026 residency at the Raymer Society in Lindsborg, Kansas. Raymer’s vibrant embroidered quilt became a point of departure for exploring portraiture, pattern, color, and personal relationships.

Using circular canvases, I combine expressive portraits with geometric, quilt-like fields drawn from friends, family, and people who have shaped my life. Color, pattern, and celestial references respond intuitively to each individual, reflecting personality, emotion, and connection.

Rooted in imagery spanning medieval and Renaissance traditions to contemporary vernacular culture, the works gradually move beyond the literal sun. They become quilted relationships—an evolving constellation of people, memories, and experiences. What began as a residency project continues as an intentionally open-ended series.
