Landscapes
This painting was completed during the Raymer Society’s Red Barn Studio Artist-in-Residence program in Lindsborg, Kansas, in the spring of 2024. It is based on a plein air sketch made years earlier in the Savoy area of Spearfish Canyon, nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Painted in early summer, the original sketch was created just as a brief rain shower passed through. When I look at this work now, I can still feel the weight of those summer rains in the air.
Having grown up in Spearfish, I have long been captivated by the canyon and its shifting light, weather, and sense of place. Whenever possible, I return to paint there en plein air, reconnecting with both the landscape and my own history. This painting is now part of a private collection in the Black Hills.
